AI Unlocks a 2,000-Year-Old Scroll Without Opening It

Artificial intelligence is helping researchers recover knowledge that has remained inaccessible for nearly two millennia. A team working on the Vesuvius Challenge has successfully read large portions of an ancient scroll recovered from Herculaneum, a Roman town buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The remarkable achievement was made without physically opening the fragile manuscript, which is too charred to survive traditional restoration techniques.

Using advanced imaging and AI-powered analysis, researchers decoded approximately 20 columns of hidden text from the scroll known as PHerc 1667. The recovered passages explore Stoic philosophy, discussing themes such as ethics, art, and human behavior. The breakthrough demonstrates how AI is becoming an essential tool not only for modern business applications but also for preserving and understanding humanity’s cultural heritage.

How AI Read an Impossible-to-Open Scroll

The scroll appears as nothing more than a tightly rolled, blackened cylinder of carbonized papyrus. Any attempt to physically unroll it would destroy the remaining text, making conventional conservation impossible.

Instead, researchers combined high-resolution X-ray scanning with AI models capable of detecting microscopic differences within the papyrus layers. Although the ancient ink is nearly invisible, subtle changes in the material allow machine learning algorithms to identify where characters are located.

Once potential text regions are detected, AI reconstructs fragmented letters, predicts missing sections, and assembles readable passages. Human experts then validate and interpret the results, combining computational analysis with historical and linguistic expertise.

This collaborative workflow has become the foundation of the Vesuvius Challenge, an international initiative launched in 2023 to digitally recover texts from the famous Herculaneum scrolls.

Recovering Ancient Knowledge

Researchers believe PHerc 1667 may have been written several centuries before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, making it significantly older than the disaster that preserved it.

The scroll is thought to have belonged to the library of an elite Roman villa buried beneath volcanic ash. Previous attempts to open it physically caused irreversible damage, leaving the remaining fragment only about 8 centimeters long.

Initial analysis also suggests the manuscript could have been authored by the Greek Stoic philosopher Chrysippus, one of the most influential thinkers of the Stoic school. If confirmed, the discovery would provide valuable new insight into classical philosophy and intellectual life in the ancient Mediterranean.

Why This Matters Beyond Archaeology

The project highlights how AI is evolving beyond automation and productivity into a powerful tool for scientific discovery.

Rather than replacing researchers, AI handles tasks that humans simply cannot perform at scale, such as analyzing massive imaging datasets, identifying nearly invisible patterns, and reconstructing damaged information. Human historians, linguists, and archaeologists remain responsible for interpreting the meaning and historical significance of the recovered texts.

This human-AI collaboration illustrates a broader trend across industries: AI delivers the greatest value when it augments expert knowledge instead of replacing it.

The Bigger Picture

The Herculaneum library still contains hundreds of unopened scrolls, many of which have remained unread since the first century. As AI imaging techniques continue to improve, researchers expect to recover thousands of additional lines of ancient literature, philosophy, and history without risking damage to these irreplaceable artifacts.

For technology leaders, the project offers another compelling example of AI’s expanding role.
